This series consists mostly of correspondence between Mark W. Clark and President Harry S. Truman during the period from 1945 to 1952. Clark wrote to Truman on various occasions, congratulating him on his 1948 re-election victory and wishing him well on his birthdays. There are also letters from Truman to Clark congratulating him on the Allied victory in Italy and informing the general that he had been named the United States High Commissioner on the Allied Council for Austria. The series also includes a letter from Truman to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, which discusses the need to provide housing for displaced persons after World War II. Also in the series is a memorandum by Clark discussing Truman's trip to California in June 1948. While visiting Italy in 1956, former President Truman criticized certain aspects of the U.S. military campaign in that country during World War II. Clark, who had commanded the 5th Army in Italy during the war, was asked by the press for his reaction to Truman's comments. The series includes an inquiry from the press and Clark's statement on that occasion.

Mark Wayne Clark (1896-1984) was born in Madison Barracks, New York. After he graduated from West Point in 1917, he commissioned in the infantry. During World War I, he became wounded in combat while commanding a battalion in France. He served with the War Department General Staff from 1921 to 1924.
